Richard Davis, the huntsman named in the title, served as huntsman to His Majesty's harriers from 1789 to 1812, which places him in the reign of George III. Harriers were small hounds used to chase hare, and the huntsman was a professional servant responsible for managing and training the pack. The original painting was by Richard Barrett Davis, an English painter known for sporting and animal subjects, and this color lithograph reproduces it as published by Ackermann & Son in London around 1930. Its pairing of a named man with hounds and horses makes it a useful record of how English hunting was portrayed in the Georgian period.
