Frances Benjamin Johnston, a pioneering American photographer, stands with Admiral George Dewey on the deck of the cruiser *Olympia*, the flagship he commanded at the Battle of Manila Bay in May 1898. That victory over the Spanish fleet made Dewey a national hero, and the ship became one of the most recognized warships of its day. Johnston built her career on portraits of public figures, and this 1899 picture pairs a celebrated sitter with a celebrated vessel. The *Olympia* survives today as a museum ship in Philadelphia.
