A pencil drawing of a stage built inside an old warehouse at Culpeper Court House, Virginia, it shows a soldiers' theater run by the Fourteenth Brooklyn, a Union infantry regiment. The sketch is dated January 1864, when the Army of the Potomac was camped in and around Culpeper for the winter. With long idle stretches between duties, soldiers across both armies put on plays, minstrel shows and concerts, often in whatever space they could find. The drawing, signed only "EF," is a rare view of that informal camp entertainment and of the makeshift stages soldiers built for it.
