Few theaters in New Haven carried as many names as the building on Crown Street near Church Street, which appears in records as Bunnell's Museum, the New Haven theater, and the Grand Opera House. This 1937 ink drawing documents it during the years when many American playhouses shifted from live performance toward motion pictures, a change that reshaped theater interiors and street fronts across the country. Its subject headings also mark it as a motion picture house, so the drawing captures a building in transition. Architectural drawings from the 1930s are valuable because they preserve plans and details that were often altered or lost in later renovations.
