This ink drawing from 1935 pairs two Newark playhouses on a single sheet: the Terminal theater, later known as Proctor's, on Park Place across from Military Park, and Waldmann's Opera House, later the Gayety, at Market and Halsey streets. Because the sheet was made as a technical record rather than an artistic view, it shows the buildings' footprints and layouts more than their street fronts. Drawings like this capture a period when many of the city's older stages were being remodeled for motion pictures and changing hands, and they now serve as a useful record of how those downtown theaters were arranged.
