This building went by several names over its life, appearing in the record as the Schubert theater, formerly Payton's and Keeney's. The ink drawing dates to 1935 and belongs to the Library of Congress's architecture and engineering holdings, which preserve building records in a form that can show plans and construction details that photographs cannot. Many Newark theaters of the 1930s were former vaudeville houses adapting to motion pictures, and this site on Branford Place and Helsey Street sat within that busy downtown entertainment district. The drawing captures a working theater at a time when its purpose was shifting.
