This ink drawing on paper captures two Newark playhouses on one sheet: the Terminal theater, known as Proctor's, on Park Place opposite Military Park, and Waldmann's Opera House, later the Gayety, at Market and Halsey streets. Dated 1935, it belongs to the Library of Congress's Architectural and Engineering drawings, a body of technical records that documents how commercial buildings were planned and recorded during the Depression years. Downtown Newark at that time supported many theaters presenting vaudeville, drama, and motion pictures, and a plan like this shows the building forms and construction details behind the public face of each stage. Such drawings help researchers trace how these theaters were arranged and how their uses changed over time.
