On Market Street, across from Rodney Square in Wilmington, Delaware, a 1931 ink drawing lays out three buildings under one plan: a playhouse, the Dupont Hotel, and the Dupont Office Building. The sheet belongs to the Library of Congress's architectural and engineering drawings and was the kind of working document used to guide construction. Combining theater, lodging, and offices in one downtown property reflects how developers of the period tried to bring entertainment and commerce together, and the scheme shows how the Rodney Square corner was being built up as a busy center of city life between the wars.
