The Orpheum theater in Memphis, Tennessee, was built in 1928 and 1929 as the Grand Opera House, a large movie and vaudeville house on Main Street, and this ink drawing records its design in the architectural and engineering drawings the Library of Congress holds under the Historic American Buildings Survey-era architecture collections. Movie palaces of the late 1920s combined stage facilities for live performance with screens and sound equipment, and drawings like this one show how those layouts were planned. The Orpheum is notable among Memphis theaters of its era, and the drawing offers a precise view of a building that once anchored the city's entertainment district.
