The lake here is the central lagoon of the Boston Public Garden, and the church spire rising above the trees beyond it gives the scene its Back Bay character. The garden was laid out in the 1860s on land reclaimed from the Charles River flats, and its curving paths and water were meant to make it a green retreat within the growing city. By 1895 the lagoon had become a popular spot for summer strolls and boating, and the swan boats introduced in 1877 were already a local institution. Photographs like this one record how the designed landscape and the city's skyline were meant to be seen together.
