Flagpoles rise above the open lawns of the Boston Public Garden in this c. 1910 panorama, a view that shows the park's wide, formal layout at the head of Boston's Common. Laid out in the 1830s as the nation's first public botanic garden, the Public Garden was designed for strolling, with winding paths, ornamental beds, and a central lagoon. By 1910 it had become one of the city's most visited civic spaces, and the open views here capture how it served residents as a place for leisure and public gatherings.
