Few pictures in the collection show Georgetown's older streets as plainly as this view of an old house on 32nd Street NW, where worn cobblestones and utility poles share the frame with stone buildings. The National Photo Company, a commercial firm that photographed Washington for postcards and published views, made the glass negative sometime between 1918 and 1920, when overhead wires were a common sight on the city's older blocks. Herbert A. French donated the negative to the Library of Congress in 1947. Look for the streaks and blemishes across the plate, which come from deterioration of the original coating rather than from the scene itself.
