Titled simply *Constance*, this platinum print is signed with the monogram MW, and a handwritten label in the collection identifies the maker as Matilde Weil. Made around 1900, it reflects the pictorialist style that shaped serious American photography at the turn of the century, when makers favored soft focus, painterly composition, and the fine tonal gradations that platinum paper could hold. The image was also published in *Camera Notes*, the journal of the Camera Club of New York, which helped circulate such work among amateurs and professionals. Frances Benjamin Johnston, herself a working photographer, kept this impression in her collection, and it reached the Library of Congress as a gift in 1948.
