Little in the record identifies the sitter, so the title, which staff devised, describes what is visible: a woman in a floral dress set off by diamond brooches and bows. Platinum printing, widely prized by serious photographers around 1900, produced soft, even tones and a matte surface that suited fabric textures like these. The print was a gift from Frances Benjamin Johnston, a prominent American photographer who gave a large body of her work to the Library of Congress in 1948. It was later reproduced in the catalog for *Ambassadors of Progress*, a 2001 book and exhibition on American photography at the Musée d'Art Américain Giverny.
