Carl Van Vechten made this gelatin silver portrait of the young novelist Gore Vidal on November 14, 1948, when Vidal was in his early twenties and had just published his second novel, *The City and the Pillar*, which had caused a stir for its frank treatment of homosexuality. Van Vechten, a writer and tireless photographer of the literary and theatrical world, sat hundreds of artists, critics and performers during the 1930s through the 1960s, and his sitters' portraits now form a major part of the Library of Congress holdings. The print came to the library as a gift from his estate in 1966, and its catalog record notes that the title was taken from information written on the back of the print.
