Few performers of the early 1930s were as closely linked to the torch song as Helen Morgan, whose 1932 sitting with Carl Van Vechten survives as a gelatin silver print dated June 23. Morgan won fame on Broadway in *Show Boat* in 1927, where her performance of Julie and her rendition of "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man" became signature moments, and she later became known for singing sorrowful songs while seated on a nightclub piano. Van Vechten, a novelist turned photographer who portrayed many stage and literary figures, made this portrait part of a large group of celebrity photographs now held by the Library of Congress.
