Cut into the rock along the Columbia River near Wishram, these markings were photographed by Edward S. Curtis as part of his effort to record Native life in the Pacific Northwest. The Wishram, a Chinookan-speaking people, lived on the river near Celilo Falls, and their rock designs are among the regional sites that drew attention in the early twentieth century. Curtis included the image in volume 8 of *The North American Indian*, where it appears under the theme of communication through signs. Looking at it now, you can see how weather has worn the designs while their original meanings remain uncertain.
