Hangakujo shows Hangaku Gozen, the female warrior of the early thirteenth century who fought alongside men in the Echigo uprisings and became known for her skill with the bow and on horseback. Yoshitoshi (1839-1892) drew her for the *Mushaburui* series during the Meiji period, when interest in samurai heroes was strong and many artists looked back to medieval battles. The vertical oban woodcut, printed in color and published by Tsunajima Kamekichi around 1885, shows the dramatic, detailed style Yoshitoshi developed in his later years.
