*Tehidoi tsubushigata* belongs to the series *Nihon banzai hyakusen hyakushō*, whose English subtitle, *Long live Japan: one hundred victories, one hundred laughs*, hints at its mix of patriotic cheer and humor. The prints date to about 1904, the year Japan went to war with Russia, when publishers issued many color woodcuts that celebrated national success while poking fun at everyday life. This vertical oban nishikie-e is catalogued under the subject of hands, and its multi-block color printing reflects the polished craft of the late Meiji period, when designers layered bright inks for a broad popular audience.
