Few images from the period show the arrival of Westerners in Japan through the eyes of Japanese artists as directly as this color woodcut. It belongs to a body of ukiyo-e prints made around 1854, when Commodore Matthew Perry's naval expedition was anchored in Edo Bay and Japanese artists were turning out large numbers of pictures about the foreign visitors. The subject is an American sailor pictured drinking, a detail that reflects the curiosity and caricature with which Japanese printmakers portrayed the crews of the black ships. Woodblock prints of this kind were produced for a broad urban audience and often mixed observation with humor.
