The Rauch Hotel at Scheveningen, a seaside resort on the North Sea coast near The Hague, stands in this view as a reminder of how the town drew visitors in the late nineteenth century. Scheveningen's beach, promenade, and bathing trade brought steady crowds of Dutch and foreign travelers, and hotels like this one served as stopping places for meals, drinks, and rest. The print was made by the photochrom process, a early color method that tinted photographs with multiple stone or plate impressions. The Detroit Publishing Company later issued many such views in its catalog, which gives the picture a second life as a record of European travel.
