Atlanta was one of the most important rail junctions in the Confederacy, and this stereograph records its railroad yards in 1864, the year Union forces under William T. Sherman captured the city. The picture exists as two glass negatives that form the left and right halves of a stereo pair, meant to be viewed together for a three-dimensional effect. Both plates were made with the wet collodion process, which required photographers to coat, expose and develop each plate before it dried, so field work like this was slow and demanding. The catalog record notes that these views were once credited to Alexander Gardner, a leading Civil War photographer, though that attribution has since been revised.
