Here a New York barber, cast as a patriot, lathers up a captain in a joke that turns on the phrase "in the suds." Published in London on February 14, 1775, by the printsellers Robert Sayer and John Bennett and attributed to Philip Dawe, it is the third plate in a satirical series that mocked colonial resistance for British audiences. Two months later, fighting broke out at Lexington and Concord, which gives the print's teasing tone a sharper edge in hindsight.
