A panoramic bird's-eye view of the Gettysburg battlefield, drawn as though seen from high above, shows the rolling ground where the three-day battle was fought in early July 1863. Maps and views like this were popular in the months after the fighting, when newspapers and the public wanted to follow the movements of the armies across Cemetery Ridge, Culp's Hill and the wheatfields and orchards around the town. Such pictorial views trade strict measurement for a readable sense of the land, so they show how the ridges and roads lay in relation to one another, which is worth noticing when comparing them with later survey maps.
