The fighting at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, in early July 1863 pitted the Union Army of the Potomac against Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia over three days and ended Lee's invasion of the North. This c. 1867 lithograph, published by Thomas Kelly in New York and printed by Wm. C. Robertson, comes from the postwar years, when popular prints gave the public visual accounts of the war's major engagements. The battle is also tied to Abraham Lincoln, who delivered his address at the dedication of the battlefield cemetery in November 1863. Images like this one helped shape how Americans remembered the battle in the years after the fighting ended.
