Lincoln spoke at the dedication of the Soldiers' National Cemetery in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, on November 19, 1863, and this photograph records that occasion. The ceremony marked the burial ground for Union dead from the battle fought there in July of that year, and the speech delivered that day lasted only a few minutes. Many people in the crowd had come to hear the main oration by Edward Everett, so Lincoln's brief remarks were not the expected centerpiece. Today the address is among the most quoted American speeches, and the event itself is worth noticing as a moment when the war's human cost was formally honored.
