Lincoln is traditionally linked to this spot because he stayed at the David Wills House in Gettysburg the night before the cemetery dedication, and many accounts say he put the final touches on his remarks there. Most historians believe he drafted much of the speech earlier in Washington, so the title is best read as a local tradition rather than a full account of how the text was written. The brief address, delivered on November 19, 1863, has since become one of the most quoted speeches in American history, and the site connects it to the soldiers who died in the battle.
