The inscription on the north wall of the Lincoln Memorial reproduces Lincoln's Second Inaugural Address, which he delivered on March 4, 1865, as the Civil War was nearing its end. Henry Bacon designed the Memorial, which was dedicated in 1922, and it places this speech across from the Gettysburg Address on the south wall, so visitors can read the two together. The speech's call for "malice toward none" and "charity for all," along with its closing hope to "bind up the nation's wounds," is often read as Lincoln's vision for reconciliation after the war.
