Lincoln delivered this second inaugural address on March 4, 1865, from the east portico of the U.S. Capitol, just weeks before the Civil War ended. Rather than celebrating victory, he spoke of the war as a judgment that both North and South had brought on themselves, and he closed with the famous call to act "with malice toward none, with charity for all." The speech is now widely regarded as one of the most moving in American history, and it remains a useful window onto a president near the end of his life who was already thinking about how the nation would be reunited.
