Few pictures in the Bain collection name a ship as directly as this one: the crew of the Roosevelt, photographed on the first deck at Battle Harbor, a fishing and trading station on the Labrador coast. The Roosevelt was the steamer Robert Peary had built for his Arctic voyages, named for Theodore Roosevelt, who supported Peary's polar expeditions, and it stopped at ports like Battle Harbor on the way north. The title comes from caption data recorded by the Bain News Service that has not been independently verified, so the exact date and the men pictured remain uncertain. Even so, the scene offers a glimpse of expedition life aboard a working ship at the edge of the Arctic.
