Robert E. Peary stands on the deck of the ship *Roosevelt* in a heavy fur parka, binoculars raised, in this 1907 glass-plate negative. The vessel was built for Peary's Arctic voyages and took its name from Theodore Roosevelt, who supported the explorer's polar ambitions while in the White House. Peary's expeditions in the first decade of the twentieth century aimed at the North Pole, a race that drew wide attention in American newspapers. The George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of news pictures assembled by the Bain News Service, holds images like this one, and its title comes from the service's own caption data, which was not always verified.
