The subject is a warthog, a humbler quarry than the lions and elephants that fill Theodore Roosevelt's African hunting accounts. Roosevelt spent much of 1909 and 1910 in East Africa on a collecting expedition for the Smithsonian Institution, and many animals taken on such trips were shot for museum specimens. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency, distributed pictures like this one to newspapers, and its titles were not always checked, which is why this one is marked unverified. The glass negative preserves the fine detail of an early press photograph.
