Roosevelt receives congratulations from a diplomat in this view, a scene that followed his swearing-in for a second term on March 4, 1905, the date recorded for the negative. That day he gave his inaugural address from the East Portico of the Capitol, a speech that promised to carry his policies forward. The Bain News Service, founded by photographer George Grantham Bain, sold pictures like this to newspapers soon after events took place, which shows how quickly early news photography moved. The ambassador's name is not confirmed in the record, so the caption should be read as provisional.
