Here Theodore Roosevelt is seen from the reviewing stand at the Pension Building in Washington, D.C., during the inaugural parade of March 4, 1905, the day he was sworn in for his own full term after succeeding William McKinley in 1901. Stereo cards like this one were sold door to door by canvassers, so the view was meant to be handled and viewed through a stereoscope, giving a sense of depth to the crowds and grandstands. The Pension Building, a large brick structure completed in the 1880s, was a common setting for inaugural reviewing stands, and the parade it hosted was a major public spectacle of the era.
