Bertha Kalich, the Yiddish-born and later Broadway actress, is the figure at the center of this 1905 color lithograph, a theater poster printed by J. Ottmann Lithographing Company of New York. The copyright line names Harrison gray Fiske, a playwright, drama critic and editor who managed the careers of several stage performers and was later known for his work with The New York Dramatic Mirror. Kalich was one of the leading tragediennes of the early twentieth-century American stage, and posters like this one were a principal way that producers promoted star performers to city audiences.
