The Library's record gives this card the title "Domino Discs," a name devised by staff rather than printed on the card itself, which sets it apart from the many tobacco-issued baseball cards on the board. The American Tobacco Company issued it between about 1909 and 1912, when the company packed cards into its tobacco products to encourage repeat purchases. Its halftone process let printers reproduce photographs cheaply in large runs, which is why these small portraits of players were so widely distributed. The card is part of the Benjamin K. Edwards Collection, a group of baseball cards whose survival today reflects how often collectors saved them.
