The Ramly Cigarettes issue, catalogued as T204, takes its name from the tobacco brand rather than from any single ballplayer, which sets it apart from many cards of its kind. The American Tobacco Company produced it in 1909 and packed such cards into cigarette packages to encourage repeat purchases. Collectors of the time traded and saved these small portraits, and today they offer a glimpse of early professional baseball and the advertising methods of the period. The title shown here was devised by Library staff, since the card itself does not carry a caption for this record.
