This 1909 card is one of the Ramly Cigarettes issues from the T204 series, printed by the American Tobacco Company. Its halftone photograph is paired with a stenciled border and lettering, a combination typical of the period's tobacco cards. Companies slipped cards like this into cigarette packs to stiffen the packaging and encourage repeat purchases, and the practice made baseball players familiar to millions of ordinary smokers. The card belongs to the Benjamin K. Edwards Collection, which preserves many of these early cards as a record of both the sport and the advertising methods of the time.
