Tobacco companies such as Old Mill Cigarettes inserted cards like this one into their packs in 1910, both to stiffen the package and to encourage buyers to collect a full set. This card's title was assigned by Library staff, so the record does not name the player pictured, but the card belongs to the T210 series, one of the best-known groups of early twentieth-century baseball cards. The combined relief halftone and stencil printing gave the small cardboard image its color and texture, and the cards were widely traded and kept by young fans, which is why many survive today.
