Four glass plate negatives, arranged left to right, combine into one sweeping view of Whitefish Bay and McGregor's Bay as seen from Mount Arabella in northern Ontario. The panorama dates to about 1904 and was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for large-format views of scenery and resorts that it sold to the public and promoted to railway travelers. Its commercial purpose shaped the composition, which emphasizes open water, distant shorelines, and the layered ridges of the surrounding hills. The format also shows how early photographers stitched wide scenes together from separate exposures, a technique that let viewers take in landscapes too broad for one plate.
