This sketch plan lays out a design for the grounds of the President's House, the building now known as the White House, at a time when the surrounding land was still raw and largely unimproved. Its sketched paths, plantings, and open lawns show how the president and his associates hoped to turn an unfinished setting in the new federal capital into a dignified residence. Jefferson, who took a keen interest in landscape design at Monticello, was in office during these years, so the sheet reflects both his personal taste and the broader effort to give the young capital a presentable civic face. Planners of the period often worked from rough drawings like this one before any planting or grading began.
