Its French slogan, *Économisons le pain en mangeant des pommes de terre* ("Let us save bread by eating potatoes"), tells the viewer exactly what to do. This color lithograph, signed by Yvonne Vernet and dated 1918, comes from the late stage of the war, when France was working to stretch its scarce wheat supply. Bread was a staple of the French diet, and with farmland disrupted and imports strained, officials and civic groups encouraged households to use potatoes and other substitutes to reduce flour use. The poster is a reminder that the war was fought on the home front too, through everyday meals and household habits.
