Few tobacco labels of the 1860s carried a political message as openly as this one, whose title, *Cuba Libre*, was a rallying cry for independence from Spain. The engraving pairs revolutionary figures with Cuban national emblems, reflecting the moment when the Ten Years' War began in 1868 and insurgents fought Spanish rule across the island. Cigar makers, many in Havana and among exile communities abroad, used bright labels like this to sell their goods, so a box of cigars could also carry a quiet statement of allegiance. The copyright notice names J.M.V. Rosis as the label's rights holder.
