The Ipswich River setting and the bridge running beside the works make this pencil drawing of a woolen manufactory in Ipswich, Massachusetts, a useful view of an early textile site. Dated about 1810, it comes from the John Rubens Smith collection at the Library of Congress. Smith, an English-born draftsman who worked in America in the early 1800s, recorded towns and their buildings in a careful topographical style. Around this time, small woolen works were spreading along New England's rivers, which supplied the water power that drove their machinery.
