Lowell, Massachusetts, was among the first large planned industrial cities in the United States, built along the Merrimack River in the 1820s around water-powered textile mills. A color engraving of the city from about 1850 shows it at the height of that growth, when its brick mills, canals, and boarding houses drew workers from across New England. The date is given as uncertain in the record, so the view may reflect the city a few years earlier or later. Prints like this one were popular for showing civic pride and the scale of manufacturing, and they are useful today for seeing how the mill town was laid out.
