This color lithograph promotes a rail itinerary that combined a stop in Yellowstone with a continuation to Puget Sound and Alaska, so it sells a journey as much as a place. The Northern Pacific ran a branch to the park's northern edge, where passengers transferred to horse-drawn coaches for the tour through the park. Railroads like this one issued pamphlets and posters in this period to fill seats and steamship berths, and the coaches shown here stand for the park's early tourism, when Yellowstone, established in 1872, was reached mainly by rail and stagecoach.
