Railroad promotion shaped how many Americans first pictured Yellowstone, and this 1895 map presents the park as a destination reached by train rather than a remote wilderness. The Northern Pacific's Park Branch had reached Cinnabar, Montana, near the north entrance, by the 1880s, and stagecoaches carried passengers the rest of the way to Mammoth Hot Springs. Congress had set the land aside as the first national park in 1872, and maps like this one helped turn that reservation into a major tourist draw. Note how prominently the rail lines are drawn, a clue to the company's role in bringing visitors there.
