Taken from above, this color halftone shows the main group of exhibit palaces at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition as one planned composition. The fair opened in San Francisco in 1915 to celebrate the completion of the Panama Canal and the city's recovery from the 1906 earthquake and fire, and its buildings were grouped around courts and lagoons in a classical style. The print was issued around 1914 by the Pacific Novelty Co., as the last page of an album of natural-color views copyrighted by Gabriel Moulin, so it shows how the grounds were meant to look before the crowds arrived. Its aerial angle also reflects the early years of flight, when bird's-eye views were becoming newly possible.
