Aerial views of the San Francisco Bay Area were a novelty in the 1930s, when commercial flights and aerial survey cameras were making it possible to see familiar cities from above. This print frames the Bay itself, with San Francisco, Oakland and Berkeley spread along its shores and Mt. Diablo rising to the east as a landmark that helped orient the viewer. Photographs like this, dated to about July 1934 and registered with the U.S. Copyright Office, were often made as souvenirs or promotional images, and they now document how the East Bay's streets and shoreline looked before the postwar growth that reshaped them.
