The Wright machine in this picture sits on its starting track, the wooden rail that guided the aircraft along the ground until it gained enough speed to lift off. The Wright brothers depended on this arrangement in their early flights because their machines ran on skids and needed a rail and a falling-weight launching system to get airborne. The print comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress, a news photography archive assembled in New York. It dates to about 1909, when the Wrights were demonstrating their aircraft to military and public audiences in the United States and Europe.
